Poynton Scout Band/Poynton Commodores In 1973, the First Poynton Scout committee recommended the formation of a Band as an aid to recruitment. Mr. George Bury was requested to form and train the Band and, on the first meeting, a grand total of nine interested boys attended. Instruction initially was limited to Marching, Counter marching etc. and 'The Band' completed their first engagement to great acclaim for their marching ability and smartness only, due to the fact that they did not yet possess any musical instruments on which to play. A range of instruments was eventually obtained thanks to mums, dads, friends and the Scouts. Musical tuition commenced in late November 1974. Within 18 months, the Band - Now numbering 21 boys - competed in their first contest and came first in every section open to them. More competitions followed and they began to accept bookings for parades and displays, still playing the tunes taught by Mr. Bury and practicing every Tuesday evening in Vernon Infants School and (despite almost weekly complaints from neighbours), at the Scout hut.
